Diagonal to the laptop and resting on the back wall are two black chairs, with padded backrests. When he is seated, Dr. Ted’s extended right hand can reach for syringes, Band-Aids and tongue depressors from a six-door cabinet hung on the side wall. A motion-activated hand sanitizer dispenser is screwed to the mid section of the cabinet.

Patients who require abdominal palpation lie down on a brown examination table against the wall to the left of Dr. Ted when he sits on his black swivel chair. An apparatus for weight and height measurement occupies part of the space between the doorway and the exam couch.

‘Last patient, twenty-five today,’ said Ted with a sigh. His breath pumped and deflated a broad chest beneath a checkered shirt, buttoned to the top of his collarbone.

Each day at the practice, Dr. Ted Pit looked forward to going home. The time at the bottom of the laptop now showed 6.15 pm. Physicians’ fatigue in practice is proportional to the number of patients seen each day.

The last patient, a three-year-old girl, threw up once a week ago. Her mother brought her here to get a medical note to return the child to daycare. On entering the consulting room, the mother occupied the black chair against the wall while the three-year-old loitered in the maze between the exam table, a plastic trash can and the swiveling chair.

In 1996, California became the first state to legalize medical marijuana and since then, 27 more states have passed laws allowing its use. Unfortunately, our nation’s newest administration is in stark contrast with the prior one and this could make further testing and deregulation less likely on the federal level.

Natural Foods Defined

It turns out that the term “natural” doesn’t mean all that much. Because it’s only been broadly defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s a fairly arbitrary term, the meaning of which is left up to the conscience of the food manufacturer. The FDA says that any food can be labeled as natural so long as it doesn’t include added color, synthetic substances or artificial flavors.

This definition sounds good–until you realize that it can be stretched to include such definitely non-natural substances such as aspartame, the artificial sweetener. More liberal food manufacturers argue that “natural” means any material that exists in nature. While aspartame does not exist in nature (you have to use a chemical process to create it), manufacturers say that the resulting product is made up of two amino acids, both of which do exist in nature. Never mind that they don’t exist glued together as aspartame!

So what can the savvy nutritionally-conscious consumer do about this? Go with a term that is clearly defined and regulated by the FDA: organic. In the next issue we’ll delve into the intricacies of organic foods, including basic regulations and differing levels of organic production. In the meantime, avoid foods that are only labeled as “natural” and go for those labeled “organic” or “natural and organic.” It’s the real stuff.

Their responsibilities may include assisting physicians in instructing patients about medications and preparing and administering the proper medications. Their duties vary depending on State laws about medical support personnel.

Optometrist assistants, ophthalmic assistants, and podiatrist assistants are some examples of the specialized medical administrator or assistant jobs. These MAs have specialized clinical duties that they are trained for.

To give an example, an ophthalmic assistant assists ophthalmologists by conducting diagnostic tests, applying eye dressings and showing patients how to use and care for contact lenses.

Theoretically, medical administrator or assistant employment should be easy to find. Not only is there a high demand for MAs, strictly speaking, there is also no formal education required. Some doctors are willing to hire and train high school graduates as medical assistants.

However, the reality is that if you want to find a higher-paying medical administrator or assistant jobs, having some form of education or training is best. You can increase the likelihood of your getting a good job by enrolling in a medical administrator or assistant program in a junior college, community college or vocational school.

After finishing a course, certification by a national organization such as the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) or Association of Medical Technologists (AMT) is the next step. Certification maximizes your chances of getting hired.

For years I have listened as clients told me about their challenges to be diagnosed, only to have their hopes dashed when they find themselves trapped in the ADHD medication maze. What is the ADHD medication maze? It is that tangled cycle of trying to get ADHD medications refilled. Prescriptions not relayed to local pharmacies or faxes getting lost to online medication mailing systems. Suspicious looks from pharmacists when picking up medications. Refusals by insurance companies to pay for prescribed medications. The countless dead ends, backtracking, twists and turns of getting a written prescription through the process and have it filled. The ADHD medication maze is a frustrating web where so many people with ADHD find themselves stuck not knowing which way to turn and unfortunately many give up and never get a chance to experience the possible benefits of ADHD medications.

In theory, filling medication prescriptions is supposed to be easy work. In reality, it rarely goes smoothly. Let me tell you about my own recent experience with trying to get my medications filled. I know many of you will relate.

I called to make an appointment and a month later got in to see my doctor who, after a 25-minute wait and a 10-minute appointment, prescribed me my medications. As I left the clinic, I was told a 14-day short-term prescription would be called to my local pharmacy and an email/fax would be sent to Express Scripts, my mail-order pharmacy. Okey dokey.

Not so bad. Except (you saw this coming, didn’t you?) a plan is only as good as its execution.

The following day my local pharmacy auto responder called (nice feature by the way) to let me know my short-term interim medications were ready to be picked up. I was pleasantly relieved and somewhat surprised it had been that uncomplicated. Easy peazy, I thought. I will pick them up on my way to the airport and just to be sure, allow 15 minutes extra.

You see where this is going, right?

I arrived at the pharmacy with plenty of time, trying to have faith and confidence in the system… after all they had confirmed my prescription was ready for pick up, right? I waited patiently in line for the two people before me to pick up their prescriptions and have a pharmacy consult… do dee do… no worries, plenty of time.

My turn. I stepped up, gave the pharmacist my name and they turned around to reach for my prescription. The pharmacist placed two bags on the counter, rang me up… my cost was under $10 dollars… Yay! Woo Hoo… happy dance. I even scolded myself for doubting all would work out.

And then…

Wait a minute. I had three prescriptions. “Uh hello Mr. Pharmacy Man, I’m supposed to have three medications filled today… there are only two.”

At this point I was still hopeful… wanting to trust in this “fill a pill system” and then I heard those fated words… “The doctor reordered three medications, but the XYZase is not covered by your insurance until the first of next month.”

Wait what?

And then, in a nanosecond, my stomach dropped, my pulse quickened and I began to see red. I was frustrated by the whole system. Frustrated because I trusted everyone to do their job. Angry with the realization that so many people get stuck in this medication maze with little support or map to find their way out…

Side note: I’ll admit it… I have a real problem with the way medications are dispensed in this country. It’s a crazy system, full of twists and turns we are expected to navigate in order to get prescriptions filled. It’s complicated by monetarily motivated insurance companies who decide what medical care I receive and what I don’t. Last time I checked, insurance companies do not have a medical license; they don’t have the training to decide whether I continue on a medication or not. My doctor with the advanced M.D. degree should be the one to decide medically what is in the best interest of my health.

So where was I… oh yes, standing at the pick-up counter at the pharmacy…

Mustering my courage and trying very hard not to be rude, I told the pharmacist that “the insurance company did not get to decide my medical care, my doctor did and I would pay for that prescription out of my own pocket if needed… thank you.” Then, I was asked to step out of the line and told my prescription would be filled as soon as possible.

So I waited… I don’t mind waiting… after all I had allowed an extra 15 minutes just in case. So I waited while the pharmacist filled other prescriptions, answered three phone calls… and a half hour later and 8 people less in line, the pharmacy assistant grabbed the coveted white bag, looked at me and said “it’s ready.”

Not trusting myself to say a word, fuming with the needless half hour wait, the senselessness of our insurance companies dictating our medical care and the realization of so many other people going through similar experiences… I paid the $25 for my medication and left.

Two weeks later, my interim medication bottles were almost empty, but my Express script online mail prescriptions were scheduled to arrive. (Insert laugh track.)

Yep… you guessed it… no white plastic bag with jingling pill bottles had yet graced my mailbox. I was a day away from my medications running out a second time that month.

Curses… here we go again! Who knew what had happened this time? So once again I was on the phone calling my mail-order pharmacy to see if they had received the refill order from my doc… nope they hadn’t received it. I called the doctor’s office again… “oops”… they had emailed my local pharmacy the short-term refill (we all know how that went), but “sorry” the email/fax with the prescription to my mail-order pharmacy hadn’t been sent. Do I need them to do it now?

People! Work with me here! I’m doing all I can… I need you to follow through. Who in their right mind would ever go through this craziness over and over again if their medication wasn’t necessary?

The fact is I know so many of you go through this confusing, exhausting medication maze… month after month, year after year. You bravely and boldly step into the process where you almost need a medical degree yourself to get prescriptions filled. It is ineffective, inefficient, and, unfortunately, it is what we are left to work with.

Regenerative Medicine

The Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison describes ‘Regenerative Medicine’ as ‘a new scientific and medical discipline focused on harnessing the power of stem cells and the body’s own regenerative capabilities to restore function to damaged cells, tissues and organs.’

Stem cells that are found in the umbilical cord blood of new born children have the ability to renew and regenerate themselves. A stem cell, through the process of mitosis, can divide itself to either become a specialized cell like a brain cell or muscle cell, or remain a stem cell. They are also able to repair internal damage caused by any type of disease, disorder or trauma. Stem cell transplantation, stem cell grafting and regenerative medicine are some of the ways in which these cells are used to cure disorders and illnesses.

Regenerative medicine includes a wide range of scientific disciplines, such as biochemistry, genetics, molecular biology and immunology. Scientists from these fields have been conducting research and studies in this domain and have identified three methods of using regenerative medicine. They are cellular therapies, tissue engineering and medical devices and artificial organs.

Cellular Therapies – In this method, cellular materials, in most cases adult stem cells, are extracted and stored and then injected into the site of injury, tissue damage or disease. These cells, thereafter, repair the damaged cells or regenerate new cells to replace the damaged ones.

Tissue Engineering – This method is related to the field of biomaterials development and utilizes a combination of functioning tissues, cells and scaffolds to engineer a fully functioning organ which is then implanted into the body of the receiver in place of a damaged organ or tissue.

Medical Devices and Artificial Organs – When a body organ fails, the most common method of treatment is to replace it with a donor organ. Donor organs are not easily available and can pose as a hindrance in such cases. Even if a donor is available, he or she may need to take immunosuppressant drugs before the transplant and these drugs have been known to cause side-effects. In such circumstances, medical devices that imitate the function of the failed organ can be used, instead of transplantation. An example of one such device is the ventricular assist device (VAD) that is used in place of heart transplants.

Have you ever thought about your relationship with food? Most people who are trying to lose weight experience a tumultuous relationship with food. Get Active, Slowly but Surely.

Most people get stumped in the beginning, especially those who are stuck in sedentary lifestyles. Others find the initial process so daunting that they end up not doing anything about it at all. Think small steps. It doesn’t have to be a rigorous workout immediately. Start by setting aside at least 20 minutes of your time daily, and do any physical activity while gradually increasing the duration overtime. You can start by thinking about what you enjoy doing the most or what it is that doesn’t drastically disrupt your schedule.

  • Ask yourself what type of exercise excites you. Running doesn’t require expensive gear and it allows you to go outside and get some fresh air. Yoga incorporates both the mind and the body, perfect for those who wish to practice meditation while losing weight at the same time.
  • Focus on the fun part rather than the hard part. Finding an exercise that you enjoy ensures a longer commitment towards getting active. It prevents common pitfalls such as skipping the activity or giving up easily.
  • Gradually add intensity to your workout. Once you get the habit of exercising, it is best to prolong your sets or add body weight exercises to keep it fresh and exciting. This will also prevent an exercise rut. Make sure the change is slow in order to properly condition your body and avoid injury.
  • Incorporate more physical activity in your daily tasks. Instead of driving for your next errand, why not walk. If you’ve been sitting the whole day at the office, do a 5-minute stretching during your breaks. Any simple exercise you can incorporate to your mundane tasks adds up to your healthy weight loss goals overtime.

Going Off to Camp

America has a problem with as many as one in five kids being overweight. Children need to eat balanced, nutritional meals and healthy snacks, and stay active. In a world as fast paced as ours it is difficult to be there for your kids when you hold down a full time job but the effort needs to be made. A healthy lifestyle for kids is very important and involves making the time needed to prepare healthy meals for your children. If left to their own devices we all know well what a child’s menu would consist of and any child who controls his or her own diet by zapping favorite foods in the microwave is in for trouble.

While it is the parents’ responsibility to ensure a healthy lifestyle for kids, research has shown that there are several external factors that are also responsible for our overweight children. Fast food is the number one culprit with their high calorie content and portion size. More children are being driven to school instead of good old fashioned ‘walking the two blocks to school’ concept. Of course this can also be attributed to child safety concerns. With the advent of the television, video game console and the computer it has become increasingly difficult to pry a child away and get them outdoors to play. Ask your child to stop playing his video game and come outside for a game of one-on-one basketball; the look you will get as good as asks whether you are from outer space!

Camps are an excellent solution for tackling this problem; they are geared to provide nutritious food and a whole lot of interesting activities that keep kids active and on their toes. It is hoped that the right eating habits and healthy lifestyle for kids taught at camp will translate to the home environment as well. Some of the benefits of sending your child to camp regularly can be summed up as:

  • Camps are designed to reinforce positive development of children.
  • At camp the child learns about foods that are good for them; these choices are presented in a fun environment in the company of other children, making it an overall happier experience to eat the things that are good for you but you may not like.
  • Camps have adult staffs who serve as mentors to support healthy behavior in terms of eating and activities.
  • There is a range of healthy outdoor activities even for the most die hard television fan and it is always fun to get involved in activities with other children.
  • At camp children experience learning made fun through group activities that stimulate and educate; best of all there is a firm emphasis on the value of good nutrition.

Running During Summe

  • Look for a shady alternate route. Every runner has that favorite route. But when it comes to extreme weather conditions, you may need an alternative route to keep you safer from the elements. During summer, choose less open routes. Settle for more shades, like areas with more buildings and trees. Nowadays, there are apps which can calculate the distance of the route using GPS. They also show visuals. Use the app to get the distance. That way, you still get the same distance you run in your usual route.
  • Wear sweat wicking clothes. Even by regular standards, sweatpants and baggy clothes are a no-no. You don’t want them flapping around, then heavy and sweat-soaked in several minutes. Luckily, sweat-wicking clothes are now available in stores. Brands like Adidas, Nike and Under Armour have running apparel which takes sweat from your body and lets it evaporate inform of your clothes. This way, you are cooled off, feel more comfortable and lessen your risk of being exposed to bacteria build up. Most of these clothes are lightweight and trendy, adding more appeal to the technological benefits they already provide.
  • Wear light, breathable shoes. If you’re clothes are on point, you shoes should be too. Wear running shoes which are lightweight and made from breathable materials. These type of shoes allow your feet to ‘breathe’. Good circulation prevents hot, sweaty feet and bacteria. Heavy and stiff shoes typically wear you down. Light and flexible ones let you accelerate and move more efficiently.
  • Consume additional water. Even before you run, you lose more fluids during summer than any other season. You lose around six to 12 ounces of fluid for every 20 minutes of running. Pre-hydrate before you run. Drink an additional glass of water. Look for possible ‘hydration’ stations as well. Drinking fountains in the path, or even a convenience store you can buy some water or sports drinks.
  • Wear sunscreen. The sun’s rays are good for you. But they can also be unforgiving, especially during the summer. Don’t forget to apply some sunscreen. Even a thin layer with a high SPF will help protect your skin from certain cancers and diseases.
